The aim of this paper was to analyze the idea of freedom in the thought of Friedrich Hayek, an important representative of the Austrian School of Economics. His ideas have great relevance in the face of all collectivist groups that constantly seek to achieve egalitarian goals at the cost of sacrificing individual freedoms. Hayek was a defender of all forms of market freedom, freedom of thought and civil liberties, which today are seriously threatened. Socialism was the political and economic model he fought against most because of its unfeasibility to guarantee prosperity and because it was in itself a totalitarian utopia. The analytical-synthetic method is used to carry out the research, by means of a bibliographical review of Hayek's main works. It is concluded that Hayek was a defender of classical liberal thought and warned of the threats that socialism, strong state interventionism and a whole series of restrictive legislations have for the liberties of men.
