This article analyzes the communication barriers perceived by nurses and hospitalized patients in a clinical setting. The study was carried out in a specialty hospital in Portoviejo in the province of Manabí, Ecuador, where 21 nurses on duty and 21 hospitalized patients were interviewed. A questionnaire containing 13 items for nurses and 9 items for patients addressed communication difficulties and evaluated the training of nursing staff. Participants rated the importance of various communication barriers, and the data obtained were analyzed using Excel. The results of this analysis reveal the barriers to effective communication between health personnel and patients, highlighting the need to strengthen communication training to improve patient care and satisfaction in the hospital setting. It is concluded that, to optimize patient care, it is crucial for healthcare institutions to implement ongoing training programs and practical approaches to address the identified barriers. Future studies should further investigate emotional and cultural barriers to develop specific solutions to improve communication and the quality of hospital medical care.
