The role of historical memory in the search for truth as the primordial substance of Transitional Justice: Epistemological challenges and ontological reflections

Historical memory plays a crucial role in all transitional justice processes that exist historically, due to its dual ontological and epistemological role in the search for truth. In this sense, the objective of this research consisted in discussing philosophically the material and symbolic role of historical memory in the search for truth as the primordial substance of Transitional Justice, to specify the epistemological and ontological challenges of transitional justice in the 21st century. In methodological terms, this is documentary-based hermeneutic research. It is concluded that historical memory, far from being a simple record of facts, becomes a symbolic space of dispute where identities, criminal responsibilities and possibilities of reconciliation are negotiated.
